But there was one victory he could not win - he suffered from an incurable skin disease (2 Kings 5:1b). With an entrenched false priesthood and a debased state religion prevailing in the northern kingdom, the man brought his offering to Elisha. When Elisha told the man to use this food to feed a hundred people, he knew it would not be enough. But he obeyed and his small gift fed so many people that they had enough and there was some leftover (2 kings 4:43-44). It appears that someone accidentally gathered some poisonous plant along with edible ones when searching the countryside for food. It would be death to eat the food in that pot (2 Kings 4:39-40). But he could not help the child. When Elisha arrived he first prayed to the Lord before stretching himself out over the body of the dead child. Life returned to the boy, whom Elisha returned to his overjoyed mother (2 Kings 4:31-37). Elisha saw her coming in the distance, and sent his servant, Gehazi, to ask what was wrong, but she refused to divulge her mission until she was clinging to Elisha. Nor was she content with having his servant attempt to revive the boy. But the wife insisted on going (2 Kings 4:23-24). It is strange that it was the mother and not the father who set out on this journey. But it may be that as a mother she felt more for her child than the father did. He may already have accepted his death, whereas the mother was still in denial. But the words of the prophet were fulfilled and the next year she gave birth to a son (2 Kings 4:17). The boy grew, but tragically one day he was struck down by some disease that caused an acute headache. He died in his mother’s arms (2 kings 4:18-20). Devastated, the mother laid her dead son on the bed of the man of God and set out to find Elisha. They even prepared a furnished room for his use (2 Kings 4:8-10). Showing hospitality to a man of God has its own rewards (Hebrews 13:2), but Elisha wanted to do something to show his appreciation for what they had done (2 kings 4:11-13). She and her husband had no son (2 kings 4:14). As they had no child of their own, it would be a great blessing if they were to have one. Now creditors were threatening to take her two boys as slaves to raise the money to pay the debt (2 Kings 4:1). The widow had nothing in the house except a little oil (2 Kings 4:2). But that was all that was needed to solve her problem. The miraculous supply of oil is similar to the supply of flour for the widow of Zarephath that did not run out till the end of the famine (1 kings 17:8-16). The raising of the dead child of the Shunammite woman resembles that of the child of the widow in Zarephath (1 kings 17:17-24). *One thing that should be noted about all these miracles is the faith and obedience of those who benefited. However, he had time for Jehoshaphat and agreed to consult the Lord because he was with other kings (2 Kings 3:14). He asked for a harpist to play some music to assist him. It seems that music was often associated with the prophets (1 Samuel 10:5-13). While the music was playing, Elisha heard the word of the Lord (2 Kings 3:15). But once again, as before the attack on Ramoth Gilead, Jehoshaphat advised that they consult the Lord (2 kings 3:11). Jehoshaphat had not forgotten the covenant Lord of Israel. He used this opportunity to witness to the God of the ancestors of the united Israel. Joram had little choice but to agree, particularly when it was pointed out that Elisha, who had been Elijah’s servant, was nearby. It is not clear why the large mob of youths (there were at least forty two of them - 2 kings 2:24) started to shout insults at Elisha. There must have been some reason for such shockingly disrespectful behaviour in a culture that respected elders (2 kings 2:23). From their words and those of Elisha, it seems that the water was causing deaths and harming crops (2 Kings 2:19b,21b). In the past, he had left another servant at Beersheba when he hoped to die (1 Kings 19:3-4). But Elisha refused to leave him, eah time swearing an oath to that effect. Three attempts were enough and Elijah did not try to stop Elisha from accompanying him again.
