2 Kings 5:1-27

But Elisha would not accept any gifts (2 Kings 5:16).

The mark of a true man of God is that he is not out to make money or acquire possessions but seeks the welfare of others.

Paul makes the same point when he reminds the Ephesus elders that he had not wanted to take anyone’s money or goods, but had supported himself according to Acts 20:33-35; 1 Corinthians 9:11-16; 2 Thessalonians 3:7-10; Philippians 4:15-19.

He also tells Timothy that a church leader should not be someone who loves money (1 Timothy 3:3).

This messenger has already been encountered in Exodus 3:2, when he appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The angel now moves from his position in front of the people to take up a position behind them, where the cloud that accompanies him will act as a screen between them and the Egyptians and keep this army in check all night. He must, however, have already been well known in Israel at the time he appeared to announce the judgment of God for the sins of Ahab and Israel (1 Kings 17:1). The judgment was that there would be no rain or dew for some years as a punishment for the sins mentioned in the previous verses. Elijah must not be thought of as similar to African rainmakers. Stopping or making rain was not his main work.
