Exodus 14:1-31

We are now told that the cloud that has been leading the people is a covering for the angel of God (or, as it could also be translated, ‘the messenger of God’).

This messenger has already been encountered in Exodus 3:2, when he appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The angel now moves from his position in front of the people to take up a position behind them, where the cloud that accompanies him will act as a screen between them and the Egyptians and keep this army in check all night.

However, it is also possible that those words outline the first step in creation, with the words *in the beginning* being equivalent to "first". The idea then would be that the first thing God did was to create the raw shell ( heaven and earth) and then for six days he filled that shell with content. He did not create the whole universe as a finished product in one grand gesture, but worked to create it. *07/12/2025* *THANKSGIVING SERVICE* TOPIC: *WHAT DOES GOD DO?* CONTINUING PROVISION AND PRESENCE  - God provides for the needs of all V Psalms 23:1-6; 147:1-9 1 Peter 5:6-7 Matthew 5:46; 6:25-34 Acts 14:17 The use of both *mercy* and *goodness* to describe God’s loyal love intensifies the meaning of the two words. What is described in verse 5 is God’s over abundant mercy - love that is in no way deserved. The Hebrew verb *follows* describes an animal in pursuit. When the Lord is our Shepherd, instead of being stalked by wild beasts we are pursued by the loving care of the Lord. God’s promise for the Israelites was not just for the enjoyment of this life in the land of promise (Psalms 6:1-3); it was also for the full enjoyment of the life to come in His blessed presence.
