THE POISONED POT

2 Kings 4:38-41

This next miracle happened during a time of famine, which would have made the loss of edible food even more disastrous (2 Kings 4:38). It appears that someone accidentally gathered some poisonous plant along with edible ones when searching the countryside for food. It would be death to eat the food in that pot (2 Kings 4:39-40).

Elisha added flour to the pot, and the poison was miraculously neutralized, leaving food that was safe to eat (2 Kings 4:41).

This messenger has already been encountered in Exodus 3:2, when he appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The angel now moves from his position in front of the people to take up a position behind them, where the cloud that accompanies him will act as a screen between them and the Egyptians and keep this army in check all night. He must, however, have already been well known in Israel at the time he appeared to announce the judgment of God for the sins of Ahab and Israel (1 Kings 17:1). The judgment was that there would be no rain or dew for some years as a punishment for the sins mentioned in the previous verses. Elijah must not be thought of as similar to African rainmakers. Stopping or making rain was not his main work.
