Naaman healed of leprosy

2 Kings 5:1-27

Naaman is introduced as the successful commander of the Aramean army (2 Kings 5:1a). But there was one victory he could not win - he suffered from an incurable skin disease (2 Kings 5:1b). This disease is described as leprosy - but this word was used for many serious skin diseases and may not have been what we today know as leprosy.

This messenger has already been encountered in Exodus 3:2, when he appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The angel now moves from his position in front of the people to take up a position behind them, where the cloud that accompanies him will act as a screen between them and the Egyptians and keep this army in check all night. He must, however, have already been well known in Israel at the time he appeared to announce the judgment of God for the sins of Ahab and Israel (1 Kings 17:1). The judgment was that there would be no rain or dew for some years as a punishment for the sins mentioned in the previous verses. Elijah must not be thought of as similar to African rainmakers. Stopping or making rain was not his main work.
