Aramean soldiers misled III

2 Kings 6:8 - 6:23

Elisha had prayed that his servant’s eyes would be opened, but he prayed the opposite for the Arameans. He asked God to strike them with blindness (2 kings 6:18). Then Elisha himself led them into the city of Samaria.

The King of Israel wanted to take advantage of the situation and kill the Aramean soldiers, but Elisha forbade it. Instead Elisha advised that they be treated in a way Jesus would have approved, for he told us to show love to those who persecute and ill treat us (Matthew 5:44) and to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).

The people of Samaria had solved this conflict by returning good for evil. God was pleased to use this approach to give a time of peace to Israel.

Exodus 14:21-22 Ominously for the Egyptians, this is the same wind that had brought the avery of locusts at the time of the eighth plague (Exodus 10:13). At the end of the plague, God had hurled the locusts into the Red Sea so that ‘not a locust was left’ according to Exodus 10:19. He must, however, have already been well known in Israel at the time he appeared to announce the judgment of God for the sins of Ahab and Israel (1 Kings 17:1). The judgment was that there would be no rain or dew for some years as a punishment for the sins mentioned in the previous verses. Elijah must not be thought of as similar to African rainmakers. Stopping or making rain was not his main work.
