The floating axe head II

2 Kings 6:1-7

Elisha accompanied them as they started their project (2 kings 6:3). While they were cutting the trees, the metal head of an axe came loose from its shaft and fell into deep water.

This was a disaster, as the axe had been borrowed. It may have been borrowed because the prophets could not afford to purchase their own axe head, for iron was very expensive at the time (2 kings 6:4-5). Elisha was summoned and threw a stick into the water, after which the heavy iron head floated on top of the water where it could be retrieved (2 Kings 6:6-7).

There is no way to explain how this happened without mentioning the power of God through Elisha. The God who created the law of gravity to make things fall down can also make metal float.

This messenger has already been encountered in Exodus 3:2, when he appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The angel now moves from his position in front of the people to take up a position behind them, where the cloud that accompanies him will act as a screen between them and the Egyptians and keep this army in check all night. He must, however, have already been well known in Israel at the time he appeared to announce the judgment of God for the sins of Ahab and Israel (1 Kings 17:1). The judgment was that there would be no rain or dew for some years as a punishment for the sins mentioned in the previous verses. Elijah must not be thought of as similar to African rainmakers. Stopping or making rain was not his main work.
