The Siege of Samaria

2 Kings 6:24 - 7:2

We do not know how long after the peaceful solution described in 2 Kings 6:22-23 this episode took place. The war between Israel and Aram had resumed, and the army of Ben-Hadad was camped around Samaria, trying to capture the city. People could not go out or come in, and there was great famine (2 Kings 6:24-25). Food was so scarce that people were prepared to eat the head of a donkey, even though a donkey was unclean and should not have been eaten (Leviticus 11:3). Some people were so desperate that they even killed and ate children (2 Kings 6:26-29). The King was inspecting the fortifications when he learned of this, but he clearly was not in control and was unable to offer any solution. In despair and grief at what had happened, he tore his robes, revealing that he was wearing sackcloth underneath, probably to express his own humble repentance before the Lord (2 Kings 6:30).
