FEEDING ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE 

2 Kings 4:42-44

The firstfruits were to be presented to God and His priests (Leviticus 23:15-17,20). With an entrenched false priesthood and a debased state religion prevailing in the northern kingdom, the man brought his offering to Elisha.

When Elisha told the man to use this food to feed a hundred people, he knew it would not be enough. But he obeyed and his small gift fed so many people that they had enough and there was some leftover (2 kings 4:43-44).

This story resembles the Lord’s feeding of the multitude (John 6:1-14) and may explain why the people were so ready to hail Jesus as a prophet (John 6:14).

This messenger has already been encountered in Exodus 3:2, when he appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The angel now moves from his position in front of the people to take up a position behind them, where the cloud that accompanies him will act as a screen between them and the Egyptians and keep this army in check all night. He must, however, have already been well known in Israel at the time he appeared to announce the judgment of God for the sins of Ahab and Israel (1 Kings 17:1). The judgment was that there would be no rain or dew for some years as a punishment for the sins mentioned in the previous verses. Elijah must not be thought of as similar to African rainmakers. Stopping or making rain was not his main work.
