Jehoash, King of Israel & Elisha’s Death

2 Kings 13:10-25

Jehoash succeeded his father Jehoahaz in Israel. He did not please the Lord. The author of Kings would have ended his account of the history of this reign at 2 Kings 13:13 were it not for the meeting between Jehoash and Elisha.

By this time, Elisha would have been a very old man. He was near death when Jehoash went to greet him and lament his coming death, which marked the closing of the major channel that God had used to communicate with Israel. Jehoash must have remembered how Elisha’s visions and spiritual intelligence had kept Israel informed and saved them from the attacks of Aram (2 kings 6:8-10). Now, in words similar to those Elisha himself had used when Elijah was taken away into heaven, Jehoash laments the desperate state of Israel’s army, which had been reduced to almost nothing by Hazael.
