2 Kings 5:1-27

When Naaman arrived at Elisha’s house, the prophet did not even bother to go out to address him in person. He simply sent out a messenger telling Naaman to go to the Jordan River and wash himself seven times (2 Kings 5:9-10). Naaman was an important man and was used to being treated with great respect, so he was angry about receiving so little care and attention. After all, he reasoned, if all that was needed to heal him was river water, he could bathe in the bigger rivers in Damascus (2 Kings 5:11-12). We,too, often want to design God’s salvation to suit us. The message of the gospel of salvation often sounds like foolishness to those who are perishing. But what was needed was not earthly wisdom but faith and obedience to the word of God through his prophet.

This messenger has already been encountered in Exodus 3:2, when he appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The angel now moves from his position in front of the people to take up a position behind them, where the cloud that accompanies him will act as a screen between them and the Egyptians and keep this army in check all night. He must, however, have already been well known in Israel at the time he appeared to announce the judgment of God for the sins of Ahab and Israel (1 Kings 17:1). The judgment was that there would be no rain or dew for some years as a punishment for the sins mentioned in the previous verses. Elijah must not be thought of as similar to African rainmakers. Stopping or making rain was not his main work.
