2 Kings 5:1-27

The king of Israel had no idea what to do when he received this letter. He was sure that the king of Aram was looking for an excuse to start a war.

In desperation, he tore his clothes (2 kings 5:7). Unlike the slave girl, he either didn’t know or didn’t believe that the prophet of the Lord could cure leprosy.

As soon as Elisha heard of the king’s predicament, he sent word that Naaman should come to him so that he will know that there is a prophet in Israel (2 kings 5:8).

Elisha was not calling attention to himself but was concerned that people of other nations would come to know that the God of Israel was the only true God.

This messenger has already been encountered in Exodus 3:2, when he appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The angel now moves from his position in front of the people to take up a position behind them, where the cloud that accompanies him will act as a screen between them and the Egyptians and keep this army in check all night. He must, however, have already been well known in Israel at the time he appeared to announce the judgment of God for the sins of Ahab and Israel (1 Kings 17:1). The judgment was that there would be no rain or dew for some years as a punishment for the sins mentioned in the previous verses. Elijah must not be thought of as similar to African rainmakers. Stopping or making rain was not his main work.
