THE WIDOW’S OIL: 2 Kings 4:1-7
In Old Testament times, widows were among the most needy and powerless groups in society.
Elisha met the widow of a prophet who had died before he could repay a debt he owed. Now creditors were threatening to take her two boys as slaves to raise the money to pay the debt (2 Kings 4:1). The widow had nothing in the house except a little oil (2 Kings 4:2). But that was all that was needed to solve her problem.
Elisha told her and her sons to collect as many empty bottles as they could from her neighbours and then to close the door behind her and her children. Then they were to fill all the bottles they had until none were empty. Thereafter she could sell the oil and pay off the debt, and she and her sons could live on the rest of the money.
2 Kings 4:3-7
