2 Kings 2:19-25

The word of God has power to heal (2 kings 2:22), but it also has power to destroy, as is evident from the incident described in 2 Kings 2:23-25.

It is not clear why the large mob of youths (there were at least forty two of them - 2 kings 2:24) started to shout insults at Elisha. There must have been some reason for such shockingly disrespectful behaviour in a culture that respected elders (2 kings 2:23). Elisha turned it around, looked at them and called down a curse on them (2 kings 2:24a). This curse must spring in part from the prophecies of judgment spoken against Jeroboam, Ahab and other kings. Because of their ungodly lives, the Lord was bringing disaster on the lives of those living in the land, including these youth, who were mauled by bears.

*19/04/2026* *THIRD SUNDAY SERVICE* TOPIC: *WHAT DOES GOD DO?* CONTINUING PROVISION AND PRESENCE  - God will sometimes overrule the natural order by the miraculous  True Miracles  Red Sea VII Exodus 14:1-31 God uses the east wind to drive back the water so that the Israelites can cross the sea on dry ground. Exodus 14:21-22 Ominously for the Egyptians, this is the same wind that had brought the avery of locusts at the time of the eighth plague (Exodus 10:13). At the end of the plague, God had hurled the locusts into the Red Sea so that ‘not a locust was left’ according to Exodus 10:19. *08/04/2026* *MID WEEK SERVICE* TOPIC: *WHAT DOES GOD DO?* CONTINUING PROVISION AND PRESENCE  - God will sometimes overrule the natural order by the miraculous  True Miracles  Red Sea IV Exodus 14:1-31 Rather than becoming indignant at the people’s reaction and lack of faith, Moses tries to calm the people’s fears saying, *Do not be afraid* (Exodus 14:13a). God himself will later say these same words to the people (Exodus 20:20). They can also be translated as‘stand up straight’ or ‘stay where you are!
