ELIJAH ON MOUNT CARMEL

1 Kings 18:16-46

Ahab regarded Elijah as simply another rainmaking priest, like those in Africa, who could make or stop rain.

Where Obadiah had greeted him respectfully as *my lord Elijah* (1 Kings 18:7). Because Elijah was sent by the Lord, he had no fear of the king. He defended himself and delivered the word from the Lord. It was not he who had brought trouble on Israel, but Ahab and his father’s house. They were the ones who had abandoned the Lord’s command and have followed the Baals. Elijah used the plural to make the point that there were numerous shrines dedicated to Baal. The extent to which this is true is revealed in Elijah’s words that there were 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table, meaning that the queen was providing for their upkeep (1 kings 18:18-19).

Exodus 14:21-22 Ominously for the Egyptians, this is the same wind that had brought the avery of locusts at the time of the eighth plague (Exodus 10:13). At the end of the plague, God had hurled the locusts into the Red Sea so that ‘not a locust was left’ according to Exodus 10:19. God himself will later say these same words to the people (Exodus 20:20). They can also be translated as‘stand up straight’ or ‘stay where you are!
