Exodus 14:1-31

The Egyptian army follows the fleeing Israelites into the sea, and there God throws them into confusion (Exodus 14:23-24). He causes them to have problems with their chariot wheels, which either come off or become jammed in some way, with the result that the chariots are out of commission and can not be used either for pursuit or for flight (Exodus 14:25a). And flight becomes uppermost in the Egyptians’ minds, for in a flash of enlightenment, they realize that it is the Lord who is fighting against them (Exodus 14:25b). Pharaoh had claimed not to know the Lord (Exodus 5:2), but now all his soldiers proclaim him, using the name God had revealed to Moses, ‘Yahweh’, translated ‘the Lord’.

But their recognition comes too late to save them, and all are engulfed in the returning water and drowned (Exodus 14:26-28). The Israelites are left to marvel at their deliverance. They feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.

However, it is also possible that those words outline the first step in creation, with the words *in the beginning* being equivalent to "first". The idea then would be that the first thing God did was to create the raw shell ( heaven and earth) and then for six days he filled that shell with content. *07/12/2025* *THANKSGIVING SERVICE* TOPIC: *WHAT DOES GOD DO?* CONTINUING PROVISION AND PRESENCE  - God provides for the needs of all V Psalms 23:1-6; 147:1-9 1 Peter 5:6-7 Matthew 5:46; 6:25-34 Acts 14:17 The use of both *mercy* and *goodness* to describe God’s loyal love intensifies the meaning of the two words. What is described in verse 5 is God’s over abundant mercy - love that is in no way deserved. The Hebrew verb *follows* describes an animal in pursuit. When the Lord is our Shepherd, instead of being stalked by wild beasts we are pursued by the loving care of the Lord. God’s promise for the Israelites was not just for the enjoyment of this life in the land of promise (Psalms 6:1-3); it was also for the full enjoyment of the life to come in His blessed presence.
