Exodus 3:1-10

Because God is present, the ground where Moses is standing is declared to be holy. He is told not to come any closer and take off his sandals as a sign of humility and worship.

Joshua 5:15

God then introduces himself as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, and thus the father of Israel.

Moses needs to know, exactly which god is speaking. He had been raised in a polytheistic court and would inevitably have been familiar with the many Egyptian gods, so there is nothing redundant or unnecessary about this repetition. Moreover, this identification is the basis on which Moses will be instructed to make his appeal to the people in Exodus 3:15-16.

It is absolutely useless. It can take up so much of one’s energy that one is paralyzed and cannot act. We need to recognize that while the necessities of life, like clothes, are important, they are not to become an all-consuming passion. However, it is also possible that those words outline the first step in creation, with the words *in the beginning* being equivalent to "first".
