The fearful word of judgment in Matthew 23:35-36 seems to point to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. Yet Jesus’ pastoral heart is clearly seen in his offer of God’s love to the rebel city (Matthew 23:37). He patiently waits for the people’s response, and does not force them to come to him.

It is absolutely useless. It can take up so much of one’s energy that one is paralyzed and cannot act. We need to recognize that while the necessities of life, like clothes, are important, they are not to become an all-consuming passion.
