John 3:3-8

1 Corinthians 15:50

Nicodemus takes the words as applying to the physical realm: *How can a man be born when he is old?* ( John 3:4a). In response, Jesus states that this 'new birth ' involves being born of water and the Spirit (John 3:5-7). Jesus is probably referring to John the Baptist's water baptism and his own baptism with the Holy Spirit.

John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He called people to leave their old ways of life in preparation for the coming of Jesus according to Luke 3:7-14. Jesus' baptism with the Holy Spirit according to John 1:33 brings a newness of character and the energy to move on as a member of the family of God.

*The new birth is like the wind. We can hear the sound the wind makes and see the wind's effects, but we cannot say where it has come from. In the same way, God mysteriously brings about the new birth. We do not know how it does it, but when it has taken place, we can see its effects.*

This interpretation fits well with the command that follows - to reign over all that God has made. *according to Our likeness:* This draws attention to the preceding figure of speech. Since God is Spirit according to John 4:24, there can be no "image" or "likeness" of Him in the normal sense of these words. Indeed, image-making was later strongly prohibited because of the clear ties that has with idolatry according to Exodus 20:4-6. We may not make images of God for He has already done so!
