John 3:6

1 Corinthians 15:45

Jesus states that this 'new birth ' involves being born of water and the Spirit.

John 3:5-7

There is some debate about what exactly this means, but Jesus is probably referring to John the Baptist's water baptism and his own baptism with the Holy Spirit. John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He called people to leave their old ways of life in preparation for the coming of Jesus.

Luke 3:7-14

Jesus' baptism with the Holy Spirit according to John 1:33 brings a newness of character and the energy to move on as a member of the family of God.

*Flesh cannot be made into spirit. A person must experience a spiritual rebirth*

This interpretation fits well with the command that follows - to reign over all that God has made. *according to Our likeness:* This draws attention to the preceding figure of speech. Since God is Spirit according to John 4:24, there can be no "image" or "likeness" of Him in the normal sense of these words.
