Even when an image functioned as a symbol for deity, it led worshippers away from the true worship of the living God.

God reminds us of the name *Yahweh* by which he revealed himself (Exodus 3:14-15) to indicate that he gives his glory only to this person (Isaiah 42:8-9).

Jesus will claim to be the only true representative of God (John 14:6-7).

Once again addressing his readers as dear children, John exhorts them saying, *keep yourselves from idols*.

For him, an idol is not just an object one keeps in one's closet. Rather, it is anything that keeps one from living up to one's Christian beliefs. *All one needs to do to be an idolater is to choose to believe or do something that is opposed to the will of God.*
