Two thousand years ago, a man appeared on the scene of history. He was born into the world and grew up into manhood just like every other person, but this man was different to anyone else. He was no ordinary man.

*A virgin conceived by the Holy Spirit to bring Him to birth. He was God Himself, coming to the earth in human form. He was the "Son of God"*

The word *Messiah* means "anointed". The Greek equivalent of the word is the title *Christ*. In the first century, the Jews looked for a Messiah who would deliver the nation from Roman domination, become their king and rebuild the nation of Israel to its former glory. By looking for a military deliverer and a political Messiah, the Jews minimized the messianic roles of prophet and priest. Thus many Jews rejected Jesus as the Messiah because He came as a humble spiritual Saviour and not a conquering political ruler.

The Greek name *Iesous* is the equivalent of the Hebrew name *Yeshua* meaning " The Lord Shall Save". Although a common name among the Jews according to Luke 3:29 and Colossians 4:11, the name expresses Jesus ' work on earth, that is, to save and to deliver.
