*Purpose and circumstances of a fast*

- we are to do the Lord's pleasure, not our own

Isaiah 58:3

Zechariah 7:5

The prophet responded by issuing a rebuke to all the people of the land and the priests. They were fasting because of the destruction of the temple in the fifth month

2 Kings 25:8-9 and the murder of Gedaliah in the seventh month.

2 Kings 25:25

Jeremiah 41:1-3

But these facts were simply commemorating past disasters and had nothing to do with any desire to be obedient to God and his word.
