- not heard by God if our fast results in quarreling

Isaiah 58:4

These people fast 'on that day ' which is possibly Yom kippur, the Day of Atonement which the Lord had appointed as a special day of fasting to atone for sins.

Leviticus 16:29-34

It was a day on which people were required to humble themselves and deny themselves.

But the people were hypocritically fasting once a year to obtain pardon for their sins while continuing to behave badly on that very day.
