*Characteristics of a proper fast*

- what is done in secret will be rewarded openly.

Matthew 6:17-18

Jesus teaches that fasting, like almsgiving and prayer, must not be ostentatious. It should be undertaken for a concentrated but limited time in order to enjoy close converse with God, who sees what is done in secret.

The words of Isaiah the prophet are as relevant today as they were in his own time.

Isaiah 58:2-8
