Since man is made from the dust, that is where he returns when he dies. Although God created light with a mere word, He created man by fashioning a body out of mud and clay, transforming the clay into something new, and then breathing life into it. This breath may be the narrator's way of describing the infusion of the human spirit, with it's moral, intellectual, relational and spiritual capacities. Matthew 6:17-18 Jesus teaches that fasting, like almsgiving and prayer, must not be ostentatious. It should be undertaken for a concentrated but limited time in order to enjoy close converse with God, who sees what is done in secret. The words of Isaiah the prophet are as relevant today as they were in his own time. Leviticus 16:29-34 It was a day on which people were required to humble themselves and deny themselves. Isaiah 58:3 The prophet turns his attention to those who offer false worship to the Lord. Some people seem to think that they can win favor with God by fasting and humbling themselves.
