According to the law, the witnesses for the defense had to be called first, Jesus should not have been questioned until witnesses had testified.

For the servant to have slapped Jesus was illegal according to Jewish law. There was to be no punishment before conviction.

Jesus invited His accusers to present evidence that He had done something wrong.

However, it is also possible that those words outline the first step in creation, with the words *in the beginning* being equivalent to "first".
