Pilate clearly understood that there was no case against Jesus, let alone a case deserving capital punishment. He perceived that the trumped - up charges were fuelled by envy and jealousy according to Matthew 27:18,23, and *his own wife* confirmed his suspicions through a dream.

*There is irony in her testimony, for in her we see a pagan woman hearing the voice of God in a dream, while the people of God were unable to see what was happening before their eyes*

Pilate tried to free Jesus, first by offering the crowd a choice between Barabbas, a notorious prisoner, and Jesus.
