Genesis 19


Lot's daughters conspired together to make their father drunk so that he would have sexual relations with them.

We can hardly approve of their action, yet their desperation was real. Their husbands had died and they were not likely to remarry. Their mother was also dead and they judged their father unlikely to remarry and have more children.

The shameful act of incest led to the births of two sons who would later greatly trouble Israel.

However, it is also possible that those words outline the first step in creation, with the words *in the beginning* being equivalent to "first".
