In the wilderness, the words of God turned very ominous to the Israelites. God labels them as stubborn or stiff-necked and decides to wipe them all out. *God will not forget his promise to Abraham, 'I will make of you a great nation'*

Genesis 12:2

*But he will now fulfill this promise through Moses ( proposed birth of a Mosaic nation), rather than through the Israelites*

God threatened to destroy the nation entirely and began anew with Moses.

Numbers 14:11,12

*This declaration by God prompted Moses to intercede on behalf of the people for God's mercy*
