Certainly instructions and debate must have occurred in some organized manner and in some building within the villages and cities away from Jerusalem during Old Testament times.

Yet most scholars agree that the New Testament form of the synagogue probably began taking shape after the temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed and during the exile. With their people scattered around the known world, displaced Jews needed meeting places within their new communities where they could learn about the faith of their fathers and worship God.


By the time of Jesus and Paul, synagogue served as local centers of worship, education and government in the Jewish community. The rebuilt temple in Jerusalem remained the center for sacrificial worship and the site at which to celebrate appointed feasts. But the synagogue played an ever-increasing role in the religious instruction of the Jews. In fact, one tradition claims that there were anywhere from 394 to 480 synagogues within Jerusalem itself around.  A.D 70.

According to tradition, a synagogue was established wherever there were as many as ten Jewish men. The principal meeting was on the Sabbath and typical service consisted of the recitation of the Shema, a confession of faith in the *one God* according to Deuteronomy 6:4-9, prayers, Scripture reading from the Law and the Prophets, a sermon and a benediction.
