TOPIC: *A PROPHET WITHOUT HONOUR PART TWO*

Text:

Matthew 13:53-58

Mark 6:1-6

Luke 4:16-30

Topic verse:

*But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honour except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house"*

Mark 6:4

Jesus has returned to Nazareth, his hometown, with the disciples. On the sabbath he was given a chance to teach in the synagogue. His teaching there amazed the home audience, making them wonder about the source of his teaching, of his wisdom and of miracles he was reported to have performed elsewhere (Mark 6:2). They took offense at him because *they reasoned that none of what they were seeing could be traced to his human origins* (Mark 6:3). In that they were correct! But they would not go further and trace their source to God because they still saw Jesus as just the carpenter. They had failed to see God at work.

In response, Jesus repeated the proverb that says a prophet receives honour everywhere except in his hometown (Mark 6:4). Today we might phrase this as 'familiarity breeds contempt'. Except for a few healings, the blessings that Jesus of Nazareth had bestowed on other towns and villages sadly eluded his own - all because of their unbelief.

This was a foretaste of Jesus' final rejection as he came to his own and his own received him not (John 1:11). This scenario is all too familiar today, albeit in microcosm, as an individual goes all over the place bringing blessing to others, but is not considered of much significance at home.

Jealousy is often the major causes of stumbling in such cases.

Jealousy blinds us.
