TOPIC: *A PROPHET WITHOUT HONOUR PART ONE*

Text:

Matthew 13:53-58

Mark 6:1-4

Luke 4:16-30

Memory verse:

*But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honour except in his own country, among his relatives, and in his own house"*

The call of God is honourable; the call to priesthood and ministerial offices are God ordained and no man can question it. Romans 11:29; Numbers 23:19.

"Familiarity breeds contempt" is a famous English saying, It means that when people know someone well, they no longer regard that person as worthy of respect or honour.

Many tourists pay a great deal of money to visit the spectacular Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Yet millions of Zambians and Zimbabweans have never taken the trouble to visit one of the seven natural wonders of the world right there on their doorstep.

Jesus was gaining a reputation as an effective itinerant preacher and faith healer, a rabbi with a band of disciples. Crowds followed him and listened to him gladly and expectantly. But when he returned to Nazareth, *his home town* (Matthew 13:54) he got no respect from his former neighbors and friends. They disparagingly referred to him as the *carpenter's son* (Matthew 13:55) and *put up a fierce barrier of unbelief causing the message of the kingdom to pass them by*

In a contemporary setting, many sermons are rendered useless not by the fault of the preacher (although no doubt many preachers could improve their preaching), but by the *attitudes* of the congregation or of family members or contemporaries who know the preacher very well. When listening to exposition of the word of God, we must listen with expectancy, ignoring the person who at that moment has become God's instrument.
