Red Sea III

Exodus 14:1-31

Pharaoh’s words in Exodus 14:5 suggests that the Egyptians do not intend to kill the Israelites but to bring them back to Egypt. Nevertheless, on seeing the pursuing army, all the Israelites can think of is that they face death, trapped between their enemies and the sea (Exodus 14:10). They have good reason to fear. Pharaoh’s army consists of six hundred of the best chariots along with all the other chariots of Egypt (Exodus 14:7). There were probably three men in each chariot: a driver, a soldier and his squire, who carried the soldier’s shield. Such a force would look extremely impressive to the Israelites, who had no weapons and no experience in armed combat. No wonder they cry out, not only in fear but also in rage and incomprehension directed against Moses (Exodus 14:11-12). This is the first occasion on which we see the ingratitude that will characterize the people throughout the long crossing of the desert.

God has just stressed the importance of passing on memories (Exodus 13), but already the people have completely forgotten his spectacular actions on their behalf.
