This text is frequently cited by those who oppose the doctrine of the Trinity, or who ask how Jesus can also be God.

But this verse does not contradict the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, for the Trinity is regarded as fundamentally united in one Godhead. It does not consist of competing or separate divinities.

The Shema starts with a statement of the unity of God.

Even the demons know that there is one God according to Deuteronomy 6:4, but they do not love Him according to Deuteronomy 6:5.

Their kind of belief does not lead to love, submission and obedience. Instead it leads to hatred, rebellion and disobedience.
