The statement of Israel's beliefs is known as the *'Shema'* according to Deuteronomy 6:4-6,9, which is introduced with the solemn *Hear, O Israel* (Deuteronomy 6:4). These verses are recited by Jews as a daily prayer, along with Deuteronomy 11:13-21 and Numbers 15:37-41.

At the heart of Israel's confession was the belief that Yahweh was not merely one in a pantheon of gods, but uniquely one. This positive assertion is sometimes regarded as the converse of the first two negative commandments in the Ten Commandments.

Yahweh was to be the sole object of Israel's faith and obedience.

This interpretation fits well with the command that follows - to reign over all that God has made. *according to Our likeness:* This draws attention to the preceding figure of speech. Since God is Spirit according to John 4:24, there can be no "image" or "likeness" of Him in the normal sense of these words. Indeed, image-making was later strongly prohibited because of the clear ties that has with idolatry according to Exodus 20:4-6. We may not make images of God for He has already done so!
