Isaiah 53:4

The Saviour Jesus came to suffer and die for the sins of others

(Isaiah 53:6,11,12; Matthew 8:17; Hebrews 9:28; 1 Peter 2:24).

Griefs - or pain - and sorrows - or sickness - refer to the consequences of sin.

The people considered Christ to have been *smitten by God* because the law said, "he who is hanged (on a tree) is accursed of God"

(Deuteronomy 21:22,23; Galatians 3:13).
