First, he identifies himself as the Creator, using language similar to that found in Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 2:7, and specifies that it is he who directs his servant according to Isaiah 42:5-6a. The Lord God introduces Himself as the source of all physical and spiritual life - *breath* and *spirit* - for He will enable the Servant to free people from death and spiritual darkness. He was controlling the creation project, with the result that all creation takes place under God's watchful eye and results from his power. John states this truth both positively and negatively. Positively, he says, *Through him all things were made* (John 1:3). Negatively, he says, *without him nothing was made* (John 1:3). In Greek, a strong distinction is drawn between the status of the Word and that of creation. While the Word 'was' in the beginning (John 1:1), the creation 'came to be ' (John 1:3). The words *with God* according to John 1:2 emphasize Jesus' face-to-face relationship with the Father. Throughout this gospel, John repeatedly states that the Father loves the Son and the Son seeks to glorify the Father. But throughout his gospel, John strongly affirms Jesus' deity. In John 1:18 he refer to him as *God the One and Only*, and both he and Jesus approve of Thomas' recognition of Jesus as 'my Lord and my God' ( John 20:28).  *10/08/2025* *SECOND SUNDAY SERVICE* TOPIC: *WHAT DOES GOD DO?* CREATION  - Creation is attributed to the Son, the Word IV John 1:1-3 Some think that John 1:1b should be translated 'and the Word was a god', arguing that in Greek a noun with an article is definite while a noun without an article is indefinite. But this rule does not always apply. At times an article is omitted in order to stress the quality of something. In this particular case, Jesus' status is that of God, but he does not exhaust what God is. The past tense 'was' does not indicate that his status has changed since then. The 'was' indicates that the Word already existed at the point in the past labelled "the beginning". The similarity between this phrase and Genesis 1:1 assert that it means the Word was already there when the world was created. While this is true, it is too limiting.
