Iesous) SUB-TOPIC: *THE MESSIAH* MAJOR OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECIES OF THE MESSIAH Deuteronomy 18:18 Whereas the Canaanites used a range of techniques in attempts to determine or manipulate the will of the gods, Yahweh acknowledged only one way to hear from him. That way was through the words of a prophet. Moses had been the first prophet in Israel. At Mount Horeb he had been the one to transmit Yahweh's message to the people when the people had been terrified at God's presence. But now Moses is old and about to die. To whom will the people turn to hear God's word? Moses reassures them that God will raise up a successor to him. While this reference does not necessarily exclude all the subsequent Old Testament prophets (who, like Moses, spoke on God's behalf), in the New Testament this prophecy is interpreted as referring to *Jesus*. *That is why John the Baptist (who was a prophet) denied being '...
