THIRD SUNDAY SERMON

THEME: *ANGELS: MESSENGERS OF GOD*

TOPIC: *WHO ARE ANGELS?*

SUB-TOPIC: *CHRIST JESUS FAR SUPERIOR TO ANGELS.*

Text:
Hebrews 1:4 - 2:15

The Son is *better than the angels*, or higher in rank, because He sits at the right hand of God (Hebrews 1:3) and because of His eternal inheritance. The Son has obtained a greater name than the angels.

The author of Hebrews uses seven Old Testament citations to explain why the Son is superior to angels.

Angels are "sons" collectively, in that they were created by God (Job 1:6). In contrast, Christ is uniquely and eternally the *Son*. He is superior to the angels.

*Today I have begotten You* probably refers to the day Christ sat down at the Father's right hand after He accomplished His work as the Messiah. On that day the eternal Son entered into the full experience of His Sonship.
*I will be to Him a Father:* This passage quotes 2 Samuel 7:14 and is a prophecy of Christ as the eternal Person in whom the Davidic line and Kingdom culminates.
*When He again brings* is a reference to the Second Coming.
*Firstborn* here refers to rank, meaning one who ranks above all others (Psalms 89:27).
The Son does not worship but is worshipped by angels. The quotation in this verse is either from the Septuagint version of Deuteronomy 32:43 or from Psalms 97:7, where the Septuagint correctly renders the Hebrew text *angels.*
The angels will *worship* the Son when He is enthroned as the King over the entire earth (Hebrews 2:5-9), after taking revenge on His enemies and restoring His people.

The Son is superior to angels because He is the Sovereign who is worshipped, while the angels are *ministers*, that is, servants of God. The author of Hebrews quotes Psalms 104 because that psalm places angels in a long list of created objects which God sovereignly controls.

*O God:* Jesus Christ is accorded the rank of full deity. The Son has an eternal *throne*, which means He possesses an eternal Kingdom.

*Companions* comes from a word that means "close associates" or "partners". The concept of believers being companions with Christ is key in Hebrews (3:1, 14; 6:4; 12:8). The term refers to those who will be participants with Christ in His reign.

The context of Psalms 102, from which Hebrews 1:10-12 verses are taken, clearly indicates that the *LORD* is the One who would appear in the future to Israel and the nations (Psalms 102:12-16). Thus the psalm can only refer to Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity, the only One who would become incarnate. Jesus is God become man. The universe will *perish* (2 Peter 3:10-13; Revelation 21:1), but the Son will *remain* forever. The universe will be *changed*, but the Son will remain *the same* (Hebrews 13:8).

Christ sits at the *right hand* of God until the final victory over all His enemies (1 Corinthians 15:25-28).
