ANGELS: SPIRITUAL BEINGS

MID-WEEK *HOLY COMMUNION* SERVICE

THEME: *ANGELS: MESSENGERS OF GOD*

TOPIC: *WHO ARE ANGELS?*

SUB-TOPIC: *ANGELS: SPIRITUAL BEINGS*

1. Angels are not flesh and blood.
Ephesians 6:12
Our real battle is not with human cultists, false religionists, atheists, agnostics and pseudo-Christians, but with the demonic beings working through them, of which even the *flesh and blood* opponents themselves are sometimes unaware.

Hebrews 1: 14
The author of Hebrews saves one powerful point till last in his description of the status of angels. Not only are they subordinate to Christ and intended to serve him, but they are sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.
Angels are servants who serve not only the Son but also all believers.

Psalms 104:4
*Angels* are also spirit beings; they may appear as flames of fire (Isaiah 6:2).

2. Angels but often appear in visible, human form.
Genesis 18:2-33
Genesis 18:1 states that it was the Lord who appeared to Abraham; Genesis 18:2 speaks of *three men*; Genesis 18:13 suggests that one of these men was the Lord. Who were the other two? Probably attending angels; each of the three visitors looked like men, but one was even greater than angels (Genesis 19:1).
The writer of Hebrews used this account to encourage hospitality to strangers, "for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels" (Hebrews 13:2).
*Genesis 18: 13 the Lord said*: Here the text makes it plain that the Lord Himself was one of the three guests.
*Genesis 18:16.* In Genesis 19:1 we find that two of these men are called angels.
*Genesis 18:17 the LORD said*: When this phrase is compared with Genesis 18:1,2,13,16; 19:1, we come to the conclusion that two of the guests of Abraham and Sarah were angels and the third was none other than the living God!

Genesis 19:1-22
*Genesis 19:1: bowed himself*: A term commonly used for the worship of God (Genesis 22:5; 24:26); here it describes Lot's act of reverance to special guests (Genesis 18:2). The angels appeared as men, and Lot greeted them as such.

Judges 6:11-22
Gideon's call is the centerpiece. It begins with the appearance of the Angel of the Lord to Gideon.
When the Angel of the Lord vanished, then Gideon realized who it was and feared for his life. Yet Gideon's fear was a prayer response for those who found themselves in the presence of God's Angel. This was also Manoah's reaction when the Angel visited him (Judges 13:21,22).
John 20:12

3. We may entertain angels without knowing it.
Hebrews 13:2
*Entertained angels* is a reference to men in the Old Testament who encountered heavenly beings. These men included Abraham (Genesis 18), Lot (Genesis 19), Gideon (Judges 6), and Manoah (Judges 13).
The idea is that when you practice hospitality you may be helping a messenger of God without realizing it.
