Another translation could be that he gathers them ‘as a heap’, as when the water piled up so that the people of Israel were able to cross the Red Sea according to Exodus 15:8. God can gather up the waters of all the oceans as easily as we can fill a bottle. That is how his creative work is described in Genesis 1:3: *’God said “Let there be light “, and there was light’*. Again, in Genesis 1:9: *’God said,”Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear “*. He has the power to create and the power to order his creation. We can rely on this same power in our circumstances. *17/09/2025* *MID WEEK SERVICE* TOPIC: *WHAT DOES GOD DO?* CREATION  - God alone can destroy spirits II Matthew 10:28 Luke 12:4-5 Before addressing the issue of being afraid or fearful, Jesus calls the disciples *my friends* (Luke 12:4). With these words he expresses his closeness to and intimacy with his disciples. It is a message of assurance before he moves on to the question of fear. Jesus distinguishes between the fear that fetters people and the fear that liberates them. We fear demons, but they do not have the power to cast us into hell. It is much more important that we fear the one who, after killing, has the power to cast us into Gehenna (hell). The only one who has that power is God (James 4:12), not the devil. Similarly, we fear persecution by the authorities and may hesitate to acknowledge what we believe when we are before them. *14/09/2025* *SECOND SUNDAY SERVICE* TOPIC: *WHAT DOES GOD DO?* CREATION  - God alone can destroy spirits  Matthew 10:28 Luke 12:4-5 When we face persecution, and possibly even death for our faith, we need to remember that Jesus does not ask his disciples to do anything he has not done himself. He endured the scorn of the Pharisees (Matthew 9:34) and was killed for his work - His disciples should expect the same treatment according to Matthew 10:24-25, for death is the logical outcome of their being Jesus’ followers. But they should also take courage from the fact that God is in control and will ultimately vindicate his own. He has first place over all others. Not only is Jesus the creator of the universe, he is also the reason it exists. So Paul hastily adds that Jesus is not part of the creation but is himself the Creator, *for by him all things were created* Yes, creation is generally attributed to the Father, but this hymn affirms that the Son was also involved, not just beside the Father, but with the Father according to John 1:1-3. The words ‘all things’ make it clear that nothing is possible and nothing exists without him.
